Training days at work are often treated as days away from the job.

That’s not the case for Axel, the RCMP police dog in Stephenville.

Late Tuesday morning, Axel was taking part in a weekly training exercise with his RCMP Police Dog Services handler and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Police Dog Services.

Axel was tracking as part of a training exercise when he immediately turned into the woods and began barking, indicating to his handler that a person was present hiding in the woods.

A 48-year-old resident of Stephenville, who was wanted in relation to several thefts in the Stephenville area, was located by Axel and found to be in possession of stolen property.

The man was arrested and released under conditions with a future court date.

Axel then resumed his tracking exercise and successfully located his toy hidden in the woods.
