As of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, recreational cannabis will become legal across Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador will be the first province where cannabis will be sold once the clocks strike midnight and several licensed retailers are putting off special events at their locations.

In St. John’s, for instance, Tweed, the brick and mortar retail arm of Canopy Growth, will have founder, chairman and Co-CEO Bruce Linton and president and Co-CEOMark Zekulin on hand for an event in St. John's to open the first retail store.

The use of cannabis for recreational purposes in the province will be restricted to private residences and will not be permitted in public places, in vehicles or in workplaces. Adults 19 and over will be allowed to have up to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public. There are no restrictions on how much people can keep in their home, as long as it’s for personal use. Adults age 19 and over will be allowed to grow up to four plants per household.
