The provincial government says it will do what it can to have local tradespeople working on the new hospital to be built in Corner Brook.
Premier Dwight Ball and a number of his cabinet ministers were in the west coast city this morning to announce that Corner Brook Health Partnership has been selected to design, build, finance and maintain the acute care component of the new regional health care facility.
The $750-million contract represents the most expensive public infrastructure project over to be built in western Newfoundland, Ball noted at the press conference announce the winning bid.
The premier also emphasized that the partnership will be hosting a job fair for skilled labourers looking to work on the construction, will develop an apprenticeship training program for local apprentices and will develop a plan to assist with hiring tradeswomen to work on the construction site.
Construction of the hospital will start later this summer and is anticipated to be completed in 2023.

About the winning bidder:
- Corner Brook Health Partnership is a consortium consisting of Plenary Group Ltd., PCL Constructors Canada Inc., Marco Services Ltd and Johnson Controls Canada.
About the new building:
- The acute care component of the regional hospital complex will be a seven-storey, 600,000 square foot facility.
- It will have will have 164 beds with the same services currently provided at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, plus an expanded cancer care program that will include radiation services.
- The facility will be connected to the 145-bed long-term care home currently under construction.
- The construction is expected to generate an estimated 4,000 person years of employment and $460 million in GDP.
