In recognition of “Purple Day” on Monday, a flag-raising and proclamation-signing ceremony was held in the main lobby of the Confederation Building to mark the start of the 2017 Purple Ribbon Campaign held to create public awareness and positively change social attitudes and behaviours regarding violence against women. The campaign is supported through the Violence Prevention Initiative and will run until Dec. 10, coinciding with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence. It also includes two significant dates in the history of violence against women: Nov. 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
