The RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador charged 12 drivers with impaired-related offences on Dec. 2 as part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.

Six of those were charged with alcohol impairment, six received roadside suspensions for alcohol of 90 days or greater, four received roadside suspensions for alcohol two to 14 days, and two received suspensions for drug-impaired driving.

There were 61 checkpoints conducted across Newfoundland and Labrador, resulting in vehicle checks of more than 2,500 vehicles, according to an RCMP news release.

"These drivers were stopped by police before something more serious happened, but we know that the consequences of impaired driving can be tragic and life altering for many people in our communities,” said RCMP Supt. Holly Turton.

“Impaired drivers put everyone on the road at risk. We can all play an important role in reducing the chances of a serious or fatal crash by arranging for a designated driver or alternative transportation during the busy holiday season and throughout the entire year."
