ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation and Walmart Canada launched the 2019 Janeway Children’s Miracle Network Champion Tuesday in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Sammi-Jo James, 13, of Point Leamington is the 2019 Janeway Children’s Miracle Network Champion.

At 33 months old, Sammi-Jo was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, the Janeway foundation stated in a news release. It has resulted in her being required to do chest physiotherapy every day before and after school, along with taking medication.

Sammi-Jo loves to go on road trips with her family. She is very close with her nine-year-old brother, Morgan, who is her best friend. They miss each other greatly when Sammi-Jo is admitted to hospital.

Sammi-Jo is shy at first, but has a sweet and gentle personality. She always has a smile and says she’s OK, even on days she is not feeling well. At times, she will cry when having medical procedures done and then apologize for being upset when the nurses are finished and give them a hug. Sammi-Jo is a very strong girl.

As the Janeway’s Champion, Sammi-Jo will travel to Orlando, Fla., representing Newfoundland and Labrador’s sick and injured Janeway children during Children’s Hospitals Week and meet champion children of all ages from across Canada and the United States. The Janeway’s 2019 Children’s Miracle Network Telethon will be broadcast live on NTV June 1 and 2.
