LEWISPORTE, NL – The RCMP is asking residents to be careful around ice following an incident near Lewisporte on Sunday, Dec. 31.
According to police, officers responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. that three snowmobilers had gone through the ice on Island Pond.
The three snowmobilers went into the water approximately 150 feet from the shoreline and were able to walk out of the water due to the depth.
Two other people from a nearby cabin helped the men ashore.
All five people were transported to hospital for medical treatment and were reported safe afterwards.
Police advise snowmobilers to always check ice thickness, avoid bodies of water that may not yet be frozen and carry emergency equipment.
