ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — SIRT team can’t be rushed: N.L. justice ministerThe provincial government is making good on its plan to establish a standalone Serious Incident Response Team.

Government says the team will be independent of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, though both have indicated their support for the team.

It will investigate all matters involving death, serious injury, sexual offence, and domestic violence as well as other matters of significant public interest that involve police.

“Establishing SIRT in this province will provide an increased level of transparency and help ensure people have trust in the system,” Andrew Parsons, minister of justice and public safety, stated in a release.

“By having a stand-alone (sic) model, we will ensure that there will be a team on the ground to deal with any investigations in the most effective and efficient manner possible.”

Government has already opened a job competition in search of its SIRT director who, once recruited, will establish the team.
