TORONTO, ONT. - Three students from Newfoundland and Labrador are among the latest 50 recipients selected from across the country for the Schulich Leader Scholarship.
They are Gaia Noseworthy of Lewisporte, Alex Janes of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s and Callie Melindy of Lumsden.
Half of the recipients receive $100,000 to pursue an engineering degree and the other 25 receive $80,000 to pursue a science, technology or mathematics degree at the program’s 20 Canadian partner universities.
Noseworthy is attending the University of New Brunswick, while Janes and Melindy are both attending Memorial University.
Some 1,400 students were nominated for the scholarships.
Recognizing the increasing importance and impact Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich created the $100 million scholarship fund in 2012.
"These students will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale,” Schulich said in a Aug. 22 release.
“With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurricular, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of technology innovators."
