UPDATE: Two seriously injured in 15-vehicle accident on Trans-Canada Highway near Birchy Narrows

Six people have been taken to hospital, including two with serious injuries, after a 15-vehicle pileup on the Trans-Canada Highway near Birchy Narrows Monday morning.

The four others taken to hopsital are believed to have injuries not considered life-threatening.

According to the RCMP, three of the vehicles involved were transport tucks.

Numerous first responders from between Corner Brook, Deer Lake, White Bay South and Springdale were at the scene to help, including an estimated eight ambulances to assist anyone who was hurt.

The police said tow trucks have been dispatched to the scene, but had not yet arrived as of shortly before 2 p.m.

The RCMP noted the highway will be closed for another while as the accident scene is cleared by emergency personnel before being turned back over to the Department of Transportation and Works.

Emergency personnel are at the scene of an accident involving multiple vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway near Birchy Narrows.

The area of western Newfoundland is often particularly prone to reduced visibility in blowing snow conditions such as those affecting the region Monday morning.

Initial reports from the scene are that the accident involves two tractor trailers and as many as 15 vehicles. There are no reports yet of injuries.

The RCMP said police, fire and ambulance are all at the scene and the Department of Transportation and Works says the highway is closed due to the accident and ongoing weather conditions.
