Helping at-risk veterans is paramount for Vets Canada.
For the fifth year, the local group gathered to hold a 24-hour vigil at the War Memorial in downtown St. John’s. Veterans who are in distress can be homeless, hungry, proud and potentially at risk of harming themselves as they attempt to reintegrate into society after serving in the military.
Getting those veterans the services they need is key to what Vets Canada does, but funding these initiatives is becoming more difficult as social enterprise organizations fight for a share of the same pool of money.
A second program that’s making great strides taps into the healing power of music. Guitars for Vets matches guitar instructors with veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder or other disabilities and who want to learn to play guitar.
