There’s been quite a bit of chatter on social media this morning from parents in Lewisporte and area wondering if the schools are open due to snow that fell overnight and is continuing to fall this morning.
The Environment Canada forecast for today states:
Snow ending late this afternoon then cloudy. Amount 10 cm. Wind becoming southeast 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning then southwest 20 this afternoon. High zero.
The Pilot contacted the Newfoundland & Labrador English School District to inquire as to what constitutes a “snow day”. We were directed to the NLESD website that anyone can visit, where information is provided as to what constitutes a school closure based on weather:

Families should take note as well that, according to the NLESD website, “The main goal of any closure or delay, be it for weather or a mechanical issue, is to ensure the safety of students. With respect to weather, the District recognizes that it cannot account for every conceivable circumstance and that families are in the best position to judge whether a student can travel safely to and from school and bus stops.”
