MARYSTOWN, N.L.
The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has confirmed a “potential risk” to Marystown Central High School for Friday, Dec. 14 is being investigated.
On Thursday, Dec. 13, a message from the school’s administration was sent to parents and guardians of students advising an increased presence of police may be noticed on Friday.
“As Marystown Central High has indicated to the school community, the school has been looking into information received about a potential risk to the school, based on a rumour, and have been liaising with the local police on the matter,” Cheryl Gullage, NLESD’s communications manager, wrote in an email to The Southern Gazette on Thursday afternoon.
Gullage acknowledged the information received by the school has not been substantiated, but both the administration and the RCMP are taking the matter seriously.
No additional details are available at this time, Gullage indicated.
Cpl. Jolene L. Garland, media relations officer with the RCMP, confirmed via an e-mail to The Southern Gazette that the local detachment of the RCMP has been contacted by the school in relation to the matter.
“The RCMP will have a presence at the school tomorrow as a measure of precaution and hope that this will ease the minds of students, staff members and parents,” she wrote.
