GANDER, N.L. — At the end of Canada Road Safety Week (May 14-20), Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers in this province had laid over 1,100 charges.
Officers patrolling roadways and communities were focusing on impaired driving, seat belt compliance, aggressive driving and distracted driving as well as other offences under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Criminal Code.
The RCMP checked over 3,500 vehicles — 24 of which were impounded for various reason — and handed out roadside license suspensions to eight drivers found to have blood alcohol concentration between 50 and 79 mg%.
The breakdown of fines and charges is as follows:
- Impaired by Alcohol (Blood Alcohol Concentration 80 mg% and above) — 10

- Aggressive Driving (31 km/h and above) — 62
