LEWISPORTE, NL — The Lewisporte Town Council is looking to preserve local history related to the response that took place as hundreds of plane passengers found themselves in Lewisporte as a result of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
At the Nov. 21 meeting of council it was noted they are looking at possibly forming a committee and/or applying for funding to hire someone to research and compile the local history related to this event.
“We don’t want it to be forgotten,” said Recreation/Tourism Committee chairperson Coun. Calvin Smart.
Coun. Perry Pond noted, “The further we get away from the date the harder it gets to get the information.”
Town manager Brian Peckford said right now times is of the essence to compile this history as the musical “Come From Away” is being made into a motion picture, “and there will be more emphasis brought to the whole 9/11 cause.”
Coun. Ken Tucker noted that last year there were visitors to the area with a connection to 9/11, and that they probably expected to see something formal related to that time in history.
Council approved a motion that they would move forward with an application for a Job Creation Project related to the 9/11 project.
