STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — Two impaired drivers were taken off the road last week after the Bay St. George Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to two tips from the public.
A 46-year-old man from Kippens was charged with drug-impaired driving after police conducted a traffic stop of his vehicle last Thursday.
Police were alerted that the man was possibly driving while impaired on Carolina Avenue in Stephenville at around 9 p.m. that night.
Police suspected the man was driving while impaired by drug and roadside field sobriety tests were administered. A drug recognition evaluation was also conducted.
In addition to the impaired charge, the man’s vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence was suspended.
Just a few hours later, at 3:30 a.m. Friday morning, police received a report of a possible impaired driver on Main Street in Stephenville.
A 19-year-old man from St. Fintan’s was stopped and arrested for impaired driving by alcohol.
Police said breath samples taken from the man at the Bay St. George detachment indicated he had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
His vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence was suspended.
Both men were subsequently released from custody and will appear in provincial court in Stephenville at a later date.
