While hurricane Dorian caused many cancellations across P.E.I. over the weekend, one couple did not let the stormy weather ruin their Saturday plans.
Joe and Roxanne Thibodeau got married at Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown on Sept. 7. Following the afternoon ceremony, Dorian was making its way to P.E.I. as a post tropical storm.
Joe, who works at the church, said they were going to get married, rain or shine. The storm began approaching Prince Edward Island on Saturday morning, gathering intensity throughout the evening and overnight.
“We dealt with it. We bought umbrellas,” said Joe.
The couple has been planning the wedding for the last year, and dating for the last two. They met at a P.E.I. beach, Joe said.
“(So) we had plans to be outside and do nice pictures.”
But because of Dorian, they instead shot their wedding photos at the Chesapeake apartment building on Malpeque Road in Charlottetown.
They had friends travelling from as far as Tignish and Saint John, N.B., to attend. Because of the weather projections and predicted power outages, they weren’t sure how long their reception would go for.
“We didn’t want to have people out in the storm,” Roxanne said.
In the end, the couple said it feels great to be married. The staff at Zion Presbyterian Church went out of their way to ensure it was a beautiful ceremony, Joe said.
