BAINE HARBOUR, N.L — He's just a little boy but Jayden Walters has a big heart.
Members of the Baine Harbour Volunteer Fire Department can certainly attest to that.
Last week the fire department got an early Christmas present, thanks to Jayden.
The six year old handed the department $2,700, money he collected from the second year of a fundraising effort that started last year with an idea and a small cardboard bank.
When Jayden received the little cardboard bank last year from member of the fire department at his school in Rushoon, he decided to give back to the department.
He collected $100 in the cardboard bank and gave it to the department.
He decided to give it another try this year.
His mother, Krista Keating, noted that following Jay’s donation last year the department donated $60 to help get him started collecting for his most recent donation.
“My mother held a little dart shoot between her friends and she raised approximately $140, and then all my relatives and close friends donated gift cards and liquor- we did a liquor basket and a gift card basket and we sold tickets on that.”
Keating said she’s impressed by the amount of money Jayden raised for the department.
“I’m pretty proud of him,” she said.
Jay presented Fire Chief Christopher Keating with the money at the departments 30th annual Fireman’s Ball on Saturday, Nov. 1.6
The donation was made in memory of Jay’s late Grand-Father Thomas Keating, who was a former member of the department.
“Absolutely outstanding and heartwarming for a six-year-old boy to do, he has a heart of gold,” said Fire Chief Keating. “I don’t get choked up over much but this sure brought a frog to my throat (on) Saturday evening.”
