SPANIARD'S BAY, N.L. — A group effort resulted in the successful rescue of a boy who injured himself while making a jump at a swimming hole near Spaniard’s Bay.

According to a Bay Roberts RCMP news release, police were contacted Tuesday, June 25 at around 6:30 p.m. about a 13-year-old boy who injured himself after jumping into the falls of a local swimming area known as the Gorge in Spaniard's Bay.

Police, Spaniard's Bay Volunteer Fire Department and Young's Ambulance attended the scene. The Avalon North Wolverines Search and Rescue were activated by police for assistance in reaching the boy. The Wolverines escorted paramedics to the boy, who received some treatment on site. Due to the terrain, he was unable to be removed from the area.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was engaged and dispatched a Cormorant from 103 Squadron Search and Rescue in Gander to remove and transport the boy.

At approximately 9 p.m., he was taken from the area by helicopter and transported to the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John's with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been treated and released.

RCMP NL reminds the public of the dangers of cliff jumping and cautions parents to have discussions with their children to ensure they understand the risks.
