The 36th annual Festival of Folk Song and Dance is taking place this weekend and there’s a little something for everyone. The festival, which has been around since 1984, kicks off on Friday at Pearce Junior High School in Salt Pond with greetings from the town of Burin and an official opening by Austin Antle.
‘Irish-Newfoundland’ is the theme of the first night, with over 16 performers gracing the stage. The Jackmans with Jeff Pittman are also playing that evening, followed by the Corcorans, who close out the night.
The second day of the festival, July 6, features country and western music from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Irish-Newfoundland music from 4 to 6 p.m. The evening features the Penney Folk Dancers and the Ray Walsh Family Band, among others.
The final day of the festival will begin with ‘Songs of Inspiration’ featuring such artists as Phil Baker, Family Ties, Baxter Bolt and Merrill Bungay, among others.
A youth session is slated from 3:55 to 5:20 on the last day and the evening will feature the Smith Brothers, the Burin Heritage Dancers and end with more Irish-Newfoundland music.
Admission for adults is $8 per day or $20 for a weekend pass, half price for kids aged 6-12. Children 5 and under are free.
