BURIN, N.L. — When Burin Peninsula RCMP were conducting a checkpoint around midnight in the Salt Pond area on July 7 they noticed a vehicle change its direction of travel in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt at avoiding the checkpoint.

RCMP tracked down the vehicle and ended up arresting the driver, a 37-year-old man from Mortier, for impaired driving. He was brought to the Marystown detachment and RCMP said he provided breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit.

The man has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and was issued a ticket for open alcohol. Police issued a driving suspension and impounded the vehicle. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grand Bank Provincial Court on Aug. 14.
