LARK HARBOUR, N.L. — Lark Harbour Mayor Jeff Parker said getting cell service for his town and neighbouring York Harbour is something people said would never happen.
But Friday it did.
During an event at the Lark Harbour Town Hall, the provincial government announced its latest project to expand wireless coverage in the province.
Through a cost-shared agreement with Bell Canada and the two towns, the province is contributing over $89,000 to provide cellular service, said a press release from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation.
Lark Harbour and York Harbour currently do not have access to wireless services.
The estimated cost of the project is $393,000. The province’s contribution represents 25 per cent. Bell will provide $224,000 and the towns will fund the remaining portion.
Parker said the partnership not only provides added convenience and safety for the residents of his town, but also helps promote tourism and economic development in the area.
“The towns have had this on their agenda for many years and have always known the importance of cell service for both tourism and safety,” said York Harbour Mayor Nelson Childs.
The project comes as a result of a provincial government call for proposals for a cost-shared cellular service pilot program through the Regional Development Fund announced as part of Budget 2018.
A date when cell service will be available was not provided.
