A couple and their two young children have been displaced from their home following a structure fire that started late Saturday night.

Pouch Cove volunteer fire department chief Derek Sullivan told the Telegram the alarm came in at 11:39 p.m. Saturday night and when firefighters arrived on scene, they found the family out on their front porch and smoke was coming from the house. The fire located in the rear section of the basement and was hosed down but not before substantial damage had been caused to the area.

The rest of the home suffered smoke damage and power was cut to the home, as is practice.

Sullivan said a large section of the rear basement wall had been removed to make sure there were no hotspots. Firefighters could also be seen gathering diapers and car seats for the children and one cat was taken to safety by the female resident.

The incident is under investigation by the RNC.
