Fortune duo cycling the boot for MS fundraiser

FORTUNE, N.L. — FORTUNE, N.L— When Murdock Hiscock and Harry Bungay planned Thursday to pedal their way around the Burin Peninsula to support multiple sclerosis, they will carry with them the memory of Harry's twin brother, David, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 58.
"That's where we got the name 'David's Dream,'" explained Harry Bungay. "My twin brother had it (MS) for 35-plus years. Each year he would deteriorate a little bit more...the last two years of his life was hell on earth."
Bungay said he and his brother shared a love of riding. After David became ill, Bungay stopped cycling but resumed in August after purchasing a new bike.
"I stopped riding because I wouldn't ride without him," he explained. "It put him through this emotional torment (that he couldn't join)."
Originally, the trio of Hiscock, Bungay and Ron Mavin had planned to take part in the MS Bike event in St. John's on Sept. 22. The event is a national fundraiser held annually for the MS Society of Canada. 
Mavin, a Stage 4 cancer survivor, was unable to ride, so the two others formed a new plan. "The two of them decided we'll do something out here and this is how this started," he said,
Mavin will travel in his truck and support the pair on their ride.
He said they are receiving a lot of support from people not only in Fortune, but throughout the peninsula.
"I'd say between us all, right now we're (at) $1,500, somewhere in that area. Most everybody we ask will come in with something," he explained.
"So at the end of the day if you can help somebody, it's worth doing." 
The trio hoped to raise $100 each, "but we've gone way past that and none of us ever thought that's what it was going to be," Mavin said.
Hiscock, who suffered a heart attack nine years ago, said the trio will travel to St. John's for the MS Bike event to present the money they raised.
"It's not from us," he said, "this is coming from all over, the whole Burin Peninsula is helping us at this." 
All money raised in Newfoundland stays in the province. "That was a big driver for us in doing this," Mavin adds. 
Hiscock said he would like to show his appreciation to everyone who aided their effort.
"We love everybody that has sponsored us," he said. "Even people who can't sponsor us because of certain things, bless your hearts — we're doing it because you guys are doing it for us — it's just amazing what people are doing for us."
Mavin, watching a passing boat over Hermitage Bay, agrees.
"If you're on the receiving end of help sometimes, it's nice to be able to give back."
