LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — The town of Labrador City is going to hold a plebiscite in September on amalgamation with the town of Wabush. Council voted unanimously on May 14 to move forward with the vote, citing results of recent public consultation sessions and a 2017 study.
“Our constituents have spoken and we have listened,” Mayor Wayne Button said in a release.
“We encourage all residents to get out and vote on this important topic.”
The 2017 feasibility study conducted by Stantec recommended the two towns come together as one but suggested public consultation happens first.
The towns held public meetings about the issue in late March and asked people there what they thought of the idea. Just over half of the people, 51.67 per cent, who attended the meetings were in favour of amalgamation and 81.58 per cent voted to hold this plebiscite.
Approximately 150 people attended the meetings, which Wabush Mayor Ron Barron said was a concern.
"One hundred and fifty people, out of a population of close to 10,000, tells me there isn’t a lot of interest in the issue," Barron told the Voice in an interview last month.
The Voice was not able to reach Wabush council before press time to see if they had decided to go ahead with a plebiscite.
