LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — What's the secret to a long and happy life? Joan Stamp's answer is simple: keeping busy.
Stamp is one of Labrador City’s pioneers, moving to the area with her husband in 1963. She recently celebrated her 93rd birthday.
“I started getting involved with the community from the get-go,” she explained. “Guides, Scouts, Brownies, the Catholic Women’s League, the church choir - just to name a few."
Add to that her involvement with TOPS, the community living association, community policing and being a founding member of the local seniors' group.
Stamp still found time to raise a family - three of her children still live in Labrador City, while another one resides in Churchill Falls and another in British Columbia.
Stamp has a binder full of memories and a stash of medals. A medal from the Pope recognizes her contributions to the community as a volunteer, while she is also the recipient of the Queens Jubilee medal and the Sovereigns Medal for Volunteers.
Then there are awards for senior of distinction. The binder has messages from the Pope, the Queen, the Prime Minister, the premier, and several Members of Parliament and Members of the House of Assembly and more.
That certainly reflects her personal motto to stay busy.
Has she slowed down at 93? Not at all. Stamp still drives, goes to the pool regularly, attends yoga classes and attends meetings of the many groups she has joined.
“I’ve got a busy time coming up soon,” says Stamp. "Winter Carnival has lots for me to get involved with."
For her birthday, a special celebration was held by the Labrador West Twin Cities 50 Plus Club. More than 100 people came with cards and well wishes to help her celebrate.
“I wasn’t expecting that big a crowd," Stamp said.
There were speeches and flowers, but most of all, the joy of celebrating Stamp's life - a life she says will continue to be busy and encourages others to do the same.
