ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The RCMP in Port aux Basques laid criminal charges against two people following an investigation into a report of the violent death of a cat alleged to have occurred in the town on Sept.10.

Peter Rossiter, 51, of O’Regan’s has been charged with one count of injuring or endangering an animal and one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Criminal Code of Canada, the RCMP stated Tuesday in a news release.

Jody Anderson, 38, of Cape Ray has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with one count of injuring or endangering an animal and two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, police said.

Both accused have been released from police custody and are scheduled to attend court in December.

The complaint was received by police on Sept. 14.

People in the Port aux Basques area and across the province and country have been outraged by the allegations.
