ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Social Justice Co-Op is organizing a “regifting raffle” to turn unused gifts into treasures for Christmas.
Lea Mary Mouvelle, a co-ordinator with the co-op, says the idea is a fundraiser for the co-op.
“We figured, it’s the holidays. What if we did a low-waste-themed fundraiser?” she said.
“We came up with this idea to regift things on a community-wide basis. People can contribute things they have lying around that they’re no longer using. We’re grouping them into themed baskets.”
Mouvelle says it’s a good time of year for people to think about how to declutter their lives.

“I think that all year round people are inundated with messages that they need to be buying and consuming to be fulfilled and happy. A lot of our theory at the co-op is to not only advocate and work toward change on a political level, but also to show the community examples of alternatives to the norm,” she said.
“We thought it would be good food for thought if we did a funding campaign around using what people already have. A lot of things that we just have kicking around because we buy more than we need to could be useful to someone else.”
The co-op will host an event at the Cochrane Centre on Wednesday starting at 7 p.m. where raffle tickets can be bought. The prices for raffle tickets hasn’t been set yet, but Mouvelle says not to expect more than $10 for a ticket. The winners of the raffles will be announced on Dec. 20.
