CLARENVILLE, N.L. — After two tenders issued, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has received no bids to buy the old primary school on Pleasant Street in Clarenville.
At the Tuesday, Dec. 3 Clarenville council meeting, chief administrative officer David Harris told council while the most recent tender deadline for sale of the vacant building was extended, the town is now planning the fate of the property.
“Council is going to have to have a discussion with the school district to see how they are planning on moving forward, either selling the property or removing it,” said Harris.
Over the past several years council has been trying to have the building demolished — but were held up when the ownership of the building and land was split between the NLESD and the United Church of Canada.
The town even issued a demolition order for the structure late last year which was appealed by the school board.
However, when the land issues were resolved, council agreed rescind the demo notice to let NLESD attempt to sell the building.
Now, it’s unclear what will happen to the building in the near future.
“I don’t think any of us want to go through another year or so of the building just sitting there dilapidating further than what it is,” said Harris.
In an interview with The Packet Dec. 4 Harris said it is hoped someone will take it over but will talk with NLESD before making any further decision.
