CATALINA, N.L. — In what started as a simple contest to promote saving energy, a group of Grade 5 students used their skills to craft a music video.
Crystal Bailey told The Packet she’s proud of the 11 Catalina Elementary students who contributed to the project for Newfoundland Power, adding she’s amazed by how much they accomplished with very little help.
“I was so impressed,” she said. “It’s unreal how creative they actually are if you give them the opportunity.”
The music video is a parody of the song “Happier” by Marshmello, and involved every student in the class. They wrote new lyrics, played the ukulele, sang and acted.
“They just took it and they went with it,” says Bailey.
Two of the boys even lent their videography skills via iMovie to create and edit the video itself.
“They put in captions under pictures... the effects they put in would’ve taken me a long time to figure out,” she laughs.
“Everyone played a role. Some people have a knack for things. We have musical students, and tech students, it was a real group project. They all worked on it and they were all so very proud.”
Bailey adds the topic of energy conservation and environment also tied in directly with a lot of their curriculum – like science, social studies and health.
Asked what the best part of the process was, the students responded it was that they did it on their own.
“It was all kids that made it. It was just us; it was our project.”
The finished product garnered the class a second-place finish in the contest from NL Power, winning $1,500 in Chapters gift cards they can use to purchase books, supplies, games and other resource materials for their classroom.
Travis Martin of NL Power surprised the entire school in the gymnasium with a showing for all the students and a pizza party for Bailey’s class.
And the students have already excitedly assessed some of the options they can buy with their prize.
