ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers were in the right place at the wrong time and a would-be shoplifter was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time Wednesday night in St. John's.

As officers were responding to a shoplifting at an east end grocery store, they saw a man fleeing the store. He was arrested without incident and found to be in possession of stolen products. However, the 35-year-old was not the individual the RNC had been called about.

Inside the store, the loss prevention officer had detained two more shoplifters — both 20-year-old men.

All three were charged with theft under $5,000 and spent the night in jail before a provincial court appearance this morning.
