UPDATED: Power restored following outage in Corner Brook

An issue with a piece of electrical equipment at the Humber Substation in Corner Brook caused a wide-spread outage in the city this morning.

The outage started at around 8:16 a.m. and a spokesperson with Newfoundland Power said about 1,800 customers were affected.

The substation is located behind the Hotel Corner Brook on Main Street and the outage affected much of the downtown area from Broadway to West Street and Main Street and also includes the school districts of Mount Bernard Avenue and University Drive. It is also affecting areas of Humbermouth, the Humber Heights, Lower Townsite and West Valley Road.

Power was restored to all affected customers by 10 a.m.

Much of Corner Brook is without electricity at this hour after an unplanned power outage struck.

The outage started at around 8:16 a.m., just as many businesses were getting ready to start the work day.

According to the Newfoundland Power website, the outage is affecting much of the downtown area from Broadway to West Street and Main Street and also includes the school districts of Mount Bernard Avenue and University Drive. It is also affecting areas of Humbermouth, the Humber Heights, Lower Townsite and West Valley Road.

The utility's website indicates the cause of the widespread outage is equipment problems and crews are working on repairs. Power should be restored by 10 a.m.
