People who have purchased turnip sticks in the past couple of weeks should check the package. Sawler Turnip Sticks and Compliments Baby Cut Turnip Sticks are both recalled.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) completed an investigation and provided updated information since the initial recall at the end of January. CFIA now has details about specific products consumers should discard due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
Health Canada is warning people not to consume products with specific codes and UPC information.
For Sawler Turnip Sticks, the specific products recalled are in the 340g bag with date label 18 FE 11 and UPC code 6 21063 36600 3.
For Compliments Baby Cut Turnip Sticks, it’s also a 340g bag with the date label 18 FE 11 and UPC code 0 68820 12504 4.
Health Canada says food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
“Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk,” the CFIA recall stated. “Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
While there are no reported illnesses related to this recall, Health Canada says anyone who suspects they became sick from consuming the turnip sticks should call their doctor.
Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
