Council exploring options to make building more accessible

ST. LAWRENCE, NL – St. Lawrence council is considering options to make town hall more accessible for community members who have difficulty getting to the second floor.

The main council chambers, a number of committee offices and a lobby used as a common area are located on the second floor of the building.

In a council meeting Tuesday, March 6 council advised it had obtained funding to install an elevator.

Mayor Paul Pike told the Southern Gazette the following day there was concern about installing an elevator due to the building’s structural issues.

“We’re thinking that where the building needs so much work, would it probably be more feasible if we took the top level off the building and made it all one level.”

That option could incorporate meeting space into a re-designed lower level, he said.

“We’d build out instead of up, and that way we could have a meeting rooms for organizations that need to use them, have a council chambers (and) a larger board room for community groups,” said Pike. “So (there’s) a lot of things we would like to see and this would provide us with an opportunity to do that.”
