Scrap heap fire in Channel-Port aux Basques draws rubberneckers

CHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L.

The Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a scrap heap fire near Shark Cove Suites in the Channel area this afternoon, Oct. 18.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown, and despite the light rain, the department deployed its water hoses.

The fire caused a traffic snarl on the nearby streets, particularly in the Army Hill area, which overlooks the area.

The fire broke out roughly an hour and a half after an unexpected power loss affecting much of the southwest coast.

The two incidents are not related.

The fire department has since left the scene.
