St. Lewis announces new town hall

ST. LEWIS, N.L. — The town of St. Lewis is getting a brand-new town hall.
Funding was announced for a new municipal building in St. Lewis during National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations at St. Lewis Academy on June 21.
The building will be a multi-purpose complex featuring a town office, a fire hall and a centre for public functions. 
It will also include storage space and an additional office that will be available for rent.
The building comes at a total cost of $470,290, with the province covering 60 per cent and the town providing the remaining 40 per cent.
The funding was announced by Lisa Dempster, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, who was joined by Todd Russell, President of the NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC), and Helen Poole, the mayor of St. Lewis.
The NCC is contributing $100,000 towards the town’s sum and has already paid for the land the town will use, while the St. Lewis Volunteer Fire Department and the town’s recreation committee have been fundraising and will also contribute to the town’s sum.
The town also intends to host a fall fair in October to fundraise for the new facility.
Vanessa Rolfe, relief town clerk, says the new building was greatly needed.
“It’s really really good news because we’ve been wanting a building for so long,” she told The Northern Pen.
