ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Are you in the market for a housing option for several hundred workers on a remote construction project?
Nalcor Energy has put a call out for expressions of interest for two sets of accommodations buildings at the main Muskrat Falls work site. The modular facilities are being sold “as is” and “where is,” leaving transportation to a new site up to the purchaser.
Piecing apart and moving around accommodations, reassembling in a new area, is not a new idea. For example, one of the complexes in Nalcor’s expressions of interest call is a 294-bed, multi-building complex, including a 358-seat kitchen and dining area. It was not new when it was installed at Muskrat Falls, but was purchased from Manitoba Hydro, who had finished using it on another project.
The second accommodations complex up for possible sale offers 480-beds. It was bought by Nalcor Energy when no longer needed for the construction of Vale’s hydromet nickel-copper-cobalt processing facility in Long Harbour and fully refurbished before opened at Muskrat Falls. Vale was the first to make use of the accommodations modules, after they were built in Norway in 2010.
What about the contents of the buildings?
In the specifications posted for the “as is” sale, it lists everything included with the housing. With the 480-bed complex, for example, each dorm room will contain a built in bed frame, mattress, combination desk/closet, wall-mounted shelf, a desk chair and a television.
The buildings in the call for expressions of interest are no longer needed for the megaproject near Happy Valley-Goose Bay. As construction of the dams and power plant are completed, the workforce has naturally declined, meaning fewer rooms are needed on site.
The call for expressions of interest closes July 29, 2019.
Apart from the two multi-building complexes described above, a third camp complex — the main accommodations, with space for over 1,500 people — remains in operation.
The main accommodations are attached to the sports facility and main building, with the theatre, main dining hall and other communal assets.
