Police are investigating the death of a 49-year-old St. John’s man following a hunting incident Friday morning.
Shortly after 9:30 am., the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) received a report that a man, who was hunting with another man, was shot with a firearm.
RNC officers – including officers with the criminal investigation division and forensic identification services – responded to the call along with ROVERS Search and Rescue and air resources from Fire and Emergency Services.
The man was pronounced dead when first responders reached the location of the incident – a wooded area near Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive in St. John’s.

A large portion of the Goulds bypass road is closed at this hour as emergency responders are dealing with an apparent hunting accident in the area.
The section of Robert E. Howlett Drive between Doyle’s Road and the Main Road in Goulds is closed by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who weren’t able to provide any information to The Telegram on the scene.
The RNC has since issued a Tweet suggested the incident involves two hunters in a wooded area.

But upon leaving the scene, St. John's Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) Deputy Chief Rick Mackey told The Telegram, " all I can say is that it appears to have been a hunting accident in the woods and folks are in the process now working on getting the person removed from the scene.
"The matter has now been turned over to the RNC for investigation."
While The Telegram was on the scene, a Rovers Ground Search & Rescue vehicle and personnel arrived on the scene, spoke with the police officers and then proceeded down the highway to assist at the scene.
