It’s a windy and rainy day along the south coast of Newfoundland and Labrador today, Feb. 8.
Environment Canada has rainfall and wind warnings in effect for the Burin Peninsula, the Avalon Peninsula southeast and southwest, and Connaigre. There is a rainfall warning for Burgeo-Ramea, and a special weather statement for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity.
Rain, which will be heavy at times, is forecast to spread across the south coast this morning. With strengthening southerly winds, gusting to 100 kilometres an hour over exposed areas, will come rising temperatures.
The rain will taper off again this afternoon or evening and colder air will quickly return.
The forecast is calling for between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain in total.
The story is a bit different in the Channel-Port aux Basques area.
Residents there can expect snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres and rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 mm. It will be followed by a quick freeze. Snow will change to rain as temperatures rise this morning. There’s a risk of freezing rain during the changeover.
Temperatures will fall quickly again later today, which will mean slippery surfaces. Motorists should take caution
