Douglas Alpen — Mesa
Alpen, Douglas Robert Barrie 1946 - 2018 Doug passed peacefully away on second of January while vacationing in Arizona. He is survived by wife, Myrtice (nee Fudge) and sons Craig and Scott; sister Margaret and brother Scott (Sheila); brother-in-law Marshall Fudge and sister-in-law Grace (Bob) Lachapelle; special aunt, Melita Barnes as well as a large number of nieces, nephews and close friends. Predeceased by his parents, Robert (Bob) and Mary Alpen (nee Huether). Doug graduated from West Vancouver Secondary School in 1964. In earlier years he was a member of Sea Cadets; played trombone in the West Vancouver Boys & Girls Band; enjoyed sailing, rugby, skiing and other outdoor activities. He served in the Canadian Navy 1969 – 1972. In 1974, he earned a diploma in Hotel Management. He was a member of the Canadian Coast Guard (MCTS) for 30 years with postings to Saint John, NB; Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Victoria, BC; Ottawa, ON; and Inuvik, NWT. Doug volunteered in a leadership role in Scouts Canada, the Anglican Church and was involved in Community Services in the various places that he lived. Doug loved to travel and he and Myrtice travelled extensively following retirement. On Saturday 27 January, a funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Lewisporte. Internment of ashes will take place later in BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. diabetes.ca
