Last week I interviewed Lewisporte’s own Allison White about her experience on Big Brother Canada. Allison coached my son Cody in soccer a few years ago so now he thinks he has some celebrity status. She got quite the laugh at that one.
She did mention that east coast people love reality television, but why I wonder?
I think people like to watch the craziness of other families to reassure them that their family is not as chaotic as they think. One of my guilty pleasures is Sister Wives — I hate that show and I think it is ridiculous to have more than one spouse and think everyone can get along like one big family. My opinion only, but I still watch it.
Fear Factor was another popular reality show. People eating every manner of evil found inside an animal and performing dangerous stunts for $50,000 — crazy, but I had to watch it even though I cringed when prairie oysters — if you don’t know what that is, Google it — were on the menu. I was even going to throw Cody a Fear Factor themed party, but I was afraid the kids would puke on my floor. Did I watch it because the contestants were doing all the things I was afraid to do like wear a bikini on national television? I would have eaten the prairie oysters wearing a snowsuit to avoid the bikini.
Another reason reality television is so irresistible is because it goes hand-in-hand with potato chips, chocolate bars, candy and pop. If you’re going to indulge in reality television it’s just as well to indulge your sweet tooth too.
We work, eat, sleep, rush and run around it would do us all good to watch some reality television once in a while and shout at the TV for some of the dumb things they do. By the way my ultimate guilty pleasure — I record old episodes of Maury Povich and watch them religiously.
