The last person I can recall that emphatically stressed the words “You people” was Ross Perot. He was a candidate for president of the U.S.A. at the time.

And, even in that day, we remember how outraged we were when we heard him thrust those words on a largely-racialized audience of voters in the south. It registered everywhere.

Don Cherry’s recent comments are indicative of a built-in, generational prejudice that he has to now reconcile with himself. One that isn’t acceptable anymore.

His analysis of hockey might be legendary but his racism will now out-shadowed by his recent comments in our current world.

Most of us might be appreciate his sports commentary work and promotion, but it is time to turn the page on his exposure to Canadians, given his prejudice.

Good riddance to him, but I hope he uses this indiscretion as an opportunity for self-reflection and he can redeem himself.

That would be inspirational to many who wrestle with the same prejudice.

Mark Power,
St. John's.
