I am a 72 year old Canadian senior who is fortunate enough to have been to every province and territory of Canada and have lived in most of them. In whatever travels I have taken outside of our country I have always worn the Canadian flag with pride — hell I even have the maple leaf tattooed on my chest.
I watched the Oct. 7 English language debate between the six federal party leaders and am left with a deep sense of foreboding for the unity of this once great country.
Really, this election is between the Liberal and Conservative Parties as to who will form the next Canadian government.
If the polls and Elizabeth May are correct it appears that the Liberals will form our next government. If they do, and it doesn’t matter whether it is a majority or a minority, the result will lead to the eventual break up of Canada as we know it.
The Liberals, the Green Party and the NDP are all committed to the destruction of Canada’s oil and gas sector.
Canada’s economy is resource based and, yes, it is driven by carbon-based fuels.
This will be the case until such a time as it is cost-viable to use alternate forms of energy.
I do recognize that we need to wean ourselves away from these fossil fuels but we cannot do this without a return to horse and buggy technology unless a cost-effective energy source can replace our dependence on oil and gas.
I also realize that we need to be more aware and protective of our environment but this has to be an entire human endeavour not just a Canadian responsibility.
Why is it OK for foreign oil to be transported up and down our waterways with a greater risk of pollution but not okay to more safely pipeline our own domestic oil to our own markets?
It makes no sense for Canadian political parties to alienate the oil producing provinces — which includes Newfoundland and Labrador — to the detriment of Canada's future prosperity and unity.
