GANDER, NL – The third phase of the Airport Nordic Ski Club’s long-term lighting project was completed during the past construction season.
New lights on the one-kilometre Black Extension Trail have been turned on, bringing the club’s total lit trails to five kilometres.
The lights are on every night until 10 p.m. during the ski season, and are essential to Airport Nordic’s activities.
The well-designed system of lighting gives people in school or at work during the day the option to ski in the late afternoon and evening.
The club offers instruction, a junior program and sprint races under the lights, and youth groups such as Cubs, Guides, and Cadets are able to visit the trails during their meetings.
In the past 10 years the club has completed five major projects including three trail-lighting projects. The club has received support from the federal and provincial governments and the Gander Coop 50/50 lottery committee, which donated $10,000 toward the cost of the latest lighting project.
The Town of Gander has supported cross-country skiing from the beginning with technical assistance, advice and financial support.
Without the support of the club’s many partners, none of the projects would have been completed. As a result, the club has become a first-class cross-country ski facility offering machine-groomed trails for classic and skate skiing for all age levels.
The club also has a ski loan program in its hut, and offers 6.5 kilometers of snowshoe trails that provide spectacular views of Gander Lake.
With a large volunteer base, the Airport Nordic Ski Club is a success with more than 400 members.
