Corner Brook Barons claim provincial B baseball championship over Gander Pilots

The Veitch Wellness Corner Brook Barons earned themselves a date with the St. John’s Capitals after sweeping the Stafford’s Welding Gander Senior Pilots in three straight games in the provincial B championship on Saturday.

Following a 4-0 win in Game 1 on Friday night and a 13-3 triumph on Saturday afternoon, the Barons completed the sweep on Saturday night, downing the Pilots 6-1.

Aaron Flood, Steve Hynes and Greg Whelan all went 2-for-3 for the Barons in the win.

Flood had two runs scored and an RBI, Hynes drove in two runs and scored once, while Whelan’s crossed the plate once and picked up an RBI.

Brian Bennett went all seven innings for the pitching win, giving up one unearned run on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Mike Dyke and AJ Whiffen were both 2-for-3 in the losing cause, with Whiffen scoring the lone run for the Pilots.

Riley King suffered the pitching defeat after giving up six runs on 10 hits, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Aaron Flood was named top batter of the series with a .571 average, while Michael Tavenor earned top pitcher honours after a shutout victory in Game 1. Flood was named tournament MVP.

The Barons will now play the Capitals in the senior A championship, which gets underway July 27.
