Player of the game A.J. Whiffen pitched the win and chipped in with a couple of hits as the Gander Pilots blanked the St. John’s Capitals 3-0 Sunday at the Molson provincial senior ‘A’ baseball championship at St. Pat’s Ball Park.

The Pilots managed to salvage one win from the first three games of the all-Newfoundland championship after dropping a doubleheader Saturday at St. Pat’s Ball Park in St. John’s.

The series resumes next Saturday at St. Pat’s.

Mattie Murphy was tagged with the loss. Eric McKay was the Caps’ player of the game.

Saturday, St. John’s won the opener 7-3, with player of the game Scott Goosney pitching the win over Matt Colbourne. Kevin Miller was Gander’s player of the game.

In the nightcap, Dan Connors won over Riley King as St. John’s won 5-2. Players of the game were the Caps’ Redmond Hunt and King.

The Caps are seeking their sixth straight provincial senior A title, and 19th in 20 years.

The Pilots are making a rare appearance in the tournament after upsetting the Corner Brook Barons for the provincial senior ‘B’ title, and the right to meet the Caps.

Next weekend, doubleheaders are set for Saturday and Sunday, with games starting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
