LABRADOR WEST, N.L.
Group members of the Happy Valley Goose Bay Special Olympics team and their supporters travelled to Labrador west recently to take part in a friendly bocce tournament.
Special Olympic activities have been growing in popularity and support in both communities over the past while.
The tournament was held at the AP Low School in Labrador City. Games were played throughout the day with each team — three from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and three from Labrador West — playing three games.
Parent Rhonda Lawrence was there with her son, a member of the Labrador West bocce team.
“It’s a good opportunity for interaction,” she said. “Lawrence helps with some of the Special Olympic events, and will travel to St. John's soon for a coaching clinic.”
Next year is a Labrador Winter Games year, and she says Special Olympic members will be part of the games. She points to her son who, skis, snowshoes and bowls and inclusion in an event like the Labrador Winter Games is important for Special Olympics members.
To round off the perfect day, a banquet was held after the tournament, followed by a fun-filled Halloween party.
