ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Burin Peninsula was well represented during School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual awards ceremony in St. John’s on Friday, May 31.
In all, 31 individuals were recognized for their contributions to the School Sports NL program.
Five of those honours went to students and volunteers from this region, including both the male and female Brother G.I. Moore Student-Athlete of the Year Awards for School Sports NL’s A classification level.
The recipients were Ethan Isaacs of Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn and Shania Kearney of St. Lawrence Academy.
Created in memory of Brother G.I. Moore, one of the founders of School Sports NL, the award is presented to student-athletes who best exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship and excellence in their high school sports careers and also includes a $500 scholarship component.
Scott Bishop of Holy Name of Mary Academy was one of four recipients of the Coaching Service Award, which is presented to individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the development of student-athletes in their program, combined with a long history of involvement in the School Sports Varsity Program.
Paulette Isaacs of St. Lawrence Academy, meanwhile, received the Participation Nation Champion Award for her efforts in spreading the message of keeping students active and advocating for increased physical activity for students in their extra-curricular time slot.
School Sports NL also presents regional awards to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the organization’s Varsity Program in their area, either over a five-year period or in one outstanding contribution.
This year’s recipient for the Burin Peninsula region was Matthew Shave of St. Lawrence Academy.
