CLARENVILLE, N.L. — The Clarenville Ford Caribous notched their first win of the season with their home opener Saturday night, beating the visiting Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts 3-1.
The Cats got the scoring going, after Michael Hynes tallied a goal assisted by Rodi Short and Michael Cole six minutes into the opening period. It would be the last lead they would see for the remainder of the contest.
The Caribous evened the score with about seven minutes left in the first, when Mason Reid scored, assisted by his brother Kevin, and defenceman Andrew Smith.
The ‘Bous got off to a quick start in the second, only 38 seconds in, taking a 2-1 lead on Justin Pender's goal, assisted by Chad Earle.
Clarenville added another two and a half minutes later to make it a two-goal lead. Ryan Desrosiers scored the goal, his second of the season, assisted by Pender and Dustin Russell.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the third frame, resulting in a 3-1 win for the home team.
Before the game got underway, the teams recognized Remembrance Day, honouring veterans with a ceremony and special puck drop.
The second game of the weekend series between the two teams is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Eastlink Events Centre.
