The Central West Senior A Hockey League got underway for another season on Saturday night, with home ice defenders, the Gander Flyers, squaring off against the Clarenville Caribous.
In front of a near capacity crowd, the Gander Flyers brought forward a solid performance, picking up a pair of goals in the first – courtesy of Brad Power and Paul Hutchings – to the Caribous lone goal netted by the Kevin Reid.
The Flyers extended the lead into the second, with a goal from Jordan Escott.
With just over four minutes left on the clock, in the third, the Caribous brought forward one last attempt to bridge the gap by pulling goaltender Jason Churchill, but any hopes of evening up the score were quickly squashed by Brandon Hynes who netted the Flyers fourth goal.
The first game of the season ended with a 4-1 win for the Flyers.
The weekend series continues on Sunday, at the Steele Community Centre in Gander at 1:30 p.m.
